Cambodia Community Health Work

/ 8

1. In Brief

Visit the alluring and exotic country of Cambodia and discover its incredible combination of dramatic landscapes, captivating cultural and historical heritage, and of course its friendly people. Visitors from the world over have fallen in love with Cambodia, with its enchanting and unique Asian culture, and complex and mystical ambience.

Nevertheless Cambodia remains one of the poorest countries in South East Asia with a lack of basic infrastructure and low levels of education recognised as being amongst the hindrances to its development. This project will present you with the unique opportunity to work with dynamic and eager Cambodians and contribute to providing an improved and effective healthcare system to those most in need. In your spare time you may have the opportunity to further explore your surroundings in the Oddar Meancheay Province, the last stronghold of the infamous Khmer Rouge.

QUALIFICATIONS

A variety of qualifications are available on many of our projects. For more information on these qualifications, please see the qualifications section of our website or ask your volunteer advisor.

2. The project

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

Poverty and a lack of adequate education trap the children of Cambodia in a cycle of deprivation that causes many problems in their lives. This may include becoming vulnerable to child labour markets where they can be forced to work hazardous jobs, or even being sold into prostitution. The ever present poverty causes malnourishment, homelessness, and lack of access to healthcare and sanitation, amongst other things. With nearly one in three 7-14 year olds unable to attend school, the prospect of escaping these inevitabilities is bleak indeed. Those who are orphaned are particularly vulnerable to deprivation and a poor level of education; hence this project is a vital way to enable them to access opportunities in this respect.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Initiialy, volunteers will take part in an orientation and cultural immersion week.  Your introductory week will be the first step towards a successful stay in Cambodia and is designed specifically to ensure that you get the most possible out of the trip as a whole. Your culture, language and cooking lessons will help you to settle and feel more at home, and the temple and museum visits will give you a taste of the history of Cambodia and the influences on the development of its national identity.

This placement is ideally suited to medical students, and even qualified doctors and nurses, with a good command of both written and spoken English, and any related experience will of course be advantageous. There is the possibility of customising the work programme to suit your area of expertise and study, and also your individual preferences as well.

Your programme will be varied and no two days will be the same. You will spend some of your time in Samraong Hospital, as well as possibly the occasional day at remote medical outposts and health centres. Activities you may find yourself involved in include, but are not restricted to, teaching about healthcare in local schools, accompanying doctors on their early morning rounds, helping to organise patients, watching and assisting minor procedures, dressing wounds, or updating administration records, as well as possibly replenishing medical aid kits in over 60 village communities and organising and helping with first aid training in the villages, as well as general duties in the hospital, depending on your personal expertise and experience and in line with local need at the time. Volunteers will also spend some time focusing on light construction work and maintenance activities, such as helping to paint or cleaning the patients’ beds. As such, the most successful volunteers will display willingness, open-mindedness and flexibility, and will be keen to involve themselves at every possible opportunity.

3. What to expect

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

Upon arrival at Siem Reap Airport you will be greeted by a representative from Frontier-Cambodia and escorted by bus on the journey to Samraong, where you will be based for the duration of your stay. Please aim to arrive before 2pm on the Sunday, and depart on the Saturday following the conclusion of your project.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

You will stay either in local homestays if you are an individual or guesthouses if you are in a larger group. You will find both alternatives to be a welcome and effective way of immersing yourself in the local community, thereby enabling you to fully appreciate all aspects of the society you will be a part of. Although basic, your accommodation will of course be clean and comfortable, and you should expect to wash your clothes by hand. All participants are expected to be environmentally aware and to use all resources with constraint, especially water, paper and electricity.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

All meals are provided and will be typical of the region. Cambodian food is characterised by rice and noodles and includes such variety as curries, soups and stir fries. There is something to suit every palate, with fish, pork chicken or vegetables often accompanying the staple rice and noodles.

Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
